59 Industrial Design Technology
According to WorldSkills Occupation Standards, the skilled industrial design technicians are required to possess the following skills covering all steps in the process of creating a product designed for mass consumption:
1. Market research and ideas formation: Understand their organization’s brand, market position, range and nature of products, business strategies and plans.
2. Design process: Create and develop design ideas according to design specifications. Evaluate the feasibility of design ideas, relative to safety, function, serviceability and budget.
3. Drawing, illustration, and graphics: Explore ways of articulating design ideas visually. Prepare sketches. Create detailed drawings, illustrations, artwork or blueprints. Use CAD software (Fusion 360 as required by WorldSkills Competition). Complete 2D and 3D drawings according to engineering and manufacturing requirements.
4. Material science and engineering: Understand the practical application of engineering science and technology, production procedures and materials. Operate 3D printer. Fabricate models or samples.
5. Project development and presentation: Complete project presentation within the required schedule, including market research results, design process, 2D and 3D drawings and their detailed design, color scheme, brand positioning, animation and simulation video for product usage scenarios, and fully functional 3D model.
